Why SteelFolio Exists

A collector's answer to a collector's problem.

I got my first knife in the early 1980s — a Buck lockback my dad bought me at the local hardware store. Almost certainly a Buck 112 Ranger. That simple gift planted a seed that never stopped growing.

Years later, stationed in Germany, I bought my first Benchmade on base. What began as a childhood interest became a lifelong passion. I discovered custom knives, met many of the best makers in the world, and even started making some of my own.

Events like Blade Show introduced me to legends who shaped the craft and rising makers pushing it forward today. Twenty years in the Army, including multiple deployments, gave me the chance to collect unique pieces along the way — a katana from the Tokyo Sword Show in 2007, standout customs from my first Blade Show in 2023, and many more. Each knife carries its own story.

But as the collection grew, so did the problem. Two decades of PCS moves — more of my career spent overseas than Stateside — meant the collection lived in boxes, storage units, and shipping containers as often as it did at home. I found myself asking the same frustrating questions:

Fire, flood, or theft would be bad enough. What’s worse is leaving your family with a lifetime of steel and stories — with no clear record of what anything is worth, where to find it, or what to do with it.

The Army taught me accountability. In early 2026, I finally applied that discipline to my own collection. Instead of another messy spreadsheet, I built something better.
